About DSO

We are the Distribution System Operator (DSO) for National Grid and our vision is to enable and coordinate a smart, flexible energy system that facilitates local decarbonisation for all customers and communities at the right time and the lowest cost.

Who we are

We are committed to playing a leading role in enabling local and regional decarbonisation as the UK transitions towards a net zero carbon energy system. We are already supporting Low Carbon Technologies (LCTs) to connect to our network. As the rollout of renewables, heat pumps and electric vehicles continues to ramp up, our forecasting shows that the demand to connect these LCTs will increase more and more rapidly. Our DSO was established in April 2023 to respond to this challenge and accommodate the changing demands on our network.

Our DSO is a functionally separate team within the National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) division of National Grid.

Where we operate

We are regulated by the energy regulator, Ofgem and are licenced to operate in four areas of the UK. The West Midlands, East Midlands, Mid and South Wales and the South West. We have dedicated teams of experts working in each of these licence areas, working together to provide the best possible service for our stakeholders.

Our stakeholders

We work with a wide variety of stakeholders who are looking to turn their decarbonization ambitions into reality, from local authorities, electricity providers, flexibility aggregates, and many more. To find out how we can help you, contact us
